"Dorothy" by Jan Kransberger

Three new exhibits are at Tryon's Upstairs Artspace from May 25 through July 7. "Mind Over Matter" explores evolution, space and consciousness in abstract paintings by Barbara Fisher, Asheville, Ann Stoddard, Spartanburg, and Felicia van Bork, Charlotte. Each artist is well represented in major galleries and private collections.
In "Parallel Play," Jan and Jim Kransberger breathe wit and beauty into figurative glass sculpture (Jan) and mixed media folk art (Jim). Though they took up art late in life, this Asheville couple has achieved phenomenal recognition and success in the profession.
"Funny Papers" is a group show of works on paper addressing social and political issues with humor and satire. The artists, all from Asheville, are Julie Armbruster, Andy Herod, Kreh Mellick, Michael Ohgren, Victor Palomino, Nathanael Roney, Martha Skinner, Kirsten Stolle, Jessica White.
A reception is Saturday, May 26, 5 to 8 p.m. Several artists will conduct a tour of the art at 4 p.m. prior to the reception. The Upstairs is located at 49 S. Trade Street; hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 12 to 6 p.m., Sunday, 12-4 p.m. Contact 828-859-2828, www.upstairsartspace.org.
