About… upstairs artspace
Upstairs Artspace is a contemporary art gallery in Tryon, North Carolina. We exhibit two- and three-dimensional fine art and craft by leading artists from the Carolinas and the Southeast, and sometimes other parts of the US.
The Gallery has a long-standing reputation for art that is of the highest quality, can be avant-garde, and is always collectible. Many artists are established in their careers, but we also look for emerging artists making fresh, innovative, and provocative art.
Upstairs Artspace was founded in 1978 in the “upstairs” bedroom of a local artist, Craig Pleasants. Today, we occupy a handsomely renovated building with more than 3000 square feet of exhibition space in three separate galleries. The exhibits, developed by an Exhibits Committee and guest curators, change every six weeks and often focus on a theme. We have a strong schedule of programs designed to educate children and adults through tours, lectures, discussions, workshops, and demonstrations. Upstate Artspace is an integral part of Tryon’s venerable art history and a force in the contemporary art scene.
Upstairs Artspace is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization with a mission is to develop understanding and appreciation of contemporary art and craft forms through exhibitions, programs, and educational activities that enrich the cultural life of the region.
