Fathers of Haiti

This historical painting is an example of the Cap-Haitien school. It depicts two military leaders conferring during the revolution. The figure in the hat is a general, most likely either Toussaint Louverture, who fought against Napoleon’s troops, or Jean Jacques Dessalines, revolutionary hero and the first leader of the new Black nation. They are both considered to be “Fathers of Haiti.” The figure on the left is of lower military ranking and could be Francois Capois, known as Capois-La-Morte (Capois Death) by the French, because he fought with such fierce resistance.
